Following on from the last post on aperture I am going to explain Depth of field often abbreviated as DOF

The aperture controls the depth of field in a photograph and in simple terms can be explained as below:

  • large aperture = narrow depth of field
  • small aperture = broad depth of field
Pinned Image

Depth of field is the items in the photograph that will be in focus and depending on where you want the  focus to be will control what aperture you use.

  • small numbers (i.e F-stops) mean a shallow depth of field so an F stop of 1.8 will be a shallow depth of field meaning you will focus on the object in the picture and the background will be blurred

  • depth of field explanationlarge numbers(i.e F.stops) mean a broad depth of field so an F stop of F22 will be a broad depth of field meaning that everything within the view of your camera lens will be in focus

My examples as below

tasks : take the same photograph using a large aperture (F3.5 small number) and a small aperture (F18 large number) and see how the background focus changes.
Next topic will be ISO

photos pinned from Pinterest click on them to find the source – edited to add that some of the links to pinterest are incorrect I am working on getting these rectified

I will revisit all topics with examples and linky tools so that we can try and improve as we go along. For now I will do simple explanations and then build on them once the initial information has been explained.

I adore taking photographs and am always clicking away.  I have taken lessons and am improving slowly and increasing my knowledge.  I love taking photographs of children and families and have even gone as far as buying studio lights (only a beginner set which is lucky as they have never been used) and a backdrop.

I have planned on getting back into taking portraits etc and have people lined up but never get round to do it.

I don’t like traditional photos and love ones that are taken from a different angle or showing peoples backs or shadows etc. I am always finding links on pinterest and here are some that Inspire me.

We have been doing a few crafts that are valentines based- some I have already posted here and here.  But some haven’t made it on here yet.

I took the idea for making hearts from toilet roll tubes from Pinterest and they worked really well with little mess.

We also made hand print hearts which K loved- any excuse to get her hands messy and of course I found it hard (I can’t deal with messy hands!) – I don’t seem to have a picture of these, whoops

We made handprints as discussed here and put them all together in a frame for a fun ‘project’ and one that my two loved!

Finally inspired by tara at Sticky Fingers I made a picture collage with a difference for MrR- I didn’t want it to be my two sitting perfect so took photos just before bed! K did the writing herself and added a heart to each page. This gift cost me £4.20 in total and will be reused for grandparents etc in the future but will get more polished photos for those!
