Snap happy

After injuring myself last week as posted here ouch I was unable to go out today to do my marathon training.  Instead I was able to go to Lady Dixon Park and get an outdoor photography lesson.  I had done lessons last year but haven’t managed to make any so far this year so it was lovely to get outside and start using my camera off auto settings.

My dad does the classes with me and we had a lovely time walking round the park taking pictures of flowers trees landscapes and clouds! I seldom photograph flowers but liked getting the time to practice the things I had been taught but hadn’t been utilising recently.

Today was for charity and as such only cost £5 there is another lesson next Saturday at Scrabo Tower but I can’t make it.  I will be back to the class in May as soon as the marathon ends!

The theme this week for the Gallery is water.

My two are water babies and adore swimming and have both gone to baby swimming lessons.  They go every week with their daddy and are both very confident in water and learning how to swim without floats etc.
I could have chosen so many pictures- arty one of water coming out of the tap, bath pictures, first swimming lessons etc but have decided to go with pictures from our first family holiday.
When Buster was only 3 months old we went to Portugal with my sisters family and hired a villa.  We had worried about the pool and K’s safety but had brought lots of floats etc with us.
On the first day we got locked out of the villa and had to wait around for a few hours to get let back in.  K had an accident and we stripped her of her costume and thought no more of it.  She played on the steps into the pool while her cousins swam about.
Next minute K fell in and I froze, she bobbed up and down and I was shouting for her 7 year old cousin to help rather than me helping.  In the end my sister screamed at me to jump in so fully clothed I did.  I honestly believe if she hadn’t had swimming lessons she would have drowned while I watched.  Drowning is not what you expect it to look like.
After this scare we made sure K had her float on at all times, over her clothes and pjs etc and after a couple of days she braved going back into the pool.
Thankfully she has forgotten about it but I don’t think I ever will.  You can never be too vigilant around water.
The rest of the holiday was fantastic and we can’t wait to go somewhere next year and Buster will be the one to watch!
One life skill I will make sure my two will master will be swimming

I start lots of hobbies and my house is full of evidence of this.  I have a blanket box full of craft items for card making and scrap booking.  K loves going into this box as she can find lots of exciting things, however she only goes near it on daddies watch as she knows I don’t allow her to use all my things without asking.

Card making lasted a long time and I even went as far as making wedding invitations for a friend and often passed on cards to family and Friends.  I gave it up when got pregnant with K as I was so sick I couldn’t enjoy it.

I then moved onto scrap booking as a logical next step, I had many of the items needed and loved adding to them.  I bought numerous scrapbooks and papers and even bought lots of different bits in New york on holiday.  I completed one scrapbook for K’s first year and started a second one for her second year- I think I also started a holiday one but can’t remember! I know I didn’t finish anymore than the first one and didn’t start any for Buster or for R as I had planned.  the empty scrapbooks and equipment is all still in the house and I still think of doing things with it but know the odds are slim of that!

After scrap booking I moved to cake making, I still enjoy this but don’t get to do it too often mainly as buster and I can’t eat the cakes so it feels nasty to make buns and cakes and not allow buster to sample them.  I have found some recipes Buster can have but I can’t decorate them in the same way.  MrR bought me a huge tool box of equipment and its constantly being added to, I now have two smaller ones to match and all three are full.

Last year both MrR and I went to a sugar craft course hoping to learn how to make models, unfortunately the information on the course was not correct and in fact all we learnt how to make were flowers and leaves etc.  this was very intricate and interesting but too slow for us and not want we wanted so we bowed out half way through the course and just when I had finished buying all the equipment we needed.

The one hobby I have maintained is photography.  I started this when R was alive and I loved taking black and white photos of him which I treasure.  Once K was born I went into overdrive and have thousands of photos documenting her first years.  For my 30th Birthday MrR bought me a digital SLR which I still have and use every week.  Since then he has added to it with lenses, a flash gun, tripods, a backdrop and frame and a beginners lighting kit which I don’t know how to use!

I don’t take as many photos these days as poor Buster suffers from second or even third child syndrome but my camera is never too far away and I can be found at most parties etc in the corner snapping away.

I have done a few portrait sittings and my photos of peoples children are on some of my Friends and families walls. I also did one wedding on my own and took back up photos for another friend at her wedding as she didn’t gel with her photographer and hated the photos he had taken.

I have started to attend classes but due to work etc I don’t get to attend them to often.

I really want to take more photos, learn about photoshop-although I prefer to try and get the photo right without having to spend hours editing it – and try and improve my very amateurish skills.

I am always on the look out for new ideas and just need the time to put them into practice.  I like taking photos of people especially children and have little interest in landscapes.

My photos will no doubt filter through on here and any criticism you have would always be welcomed.
