Fire Ants that is, they are everywhere and I have no idea how on earth we can get rid of them. We live in the country and have a biggish garden with plenty of room for my two to play as well as a spot I have earmarked for a vegetable patch and some flowerbeds too. We don’t want anything too labour intensive or expensive and have itched to get started for years.
However I am loath to actually get stuck in as the garden is riddled with red ants or fire ants as they are also called.
We first spotted these about 4 years ago at one of K’s birthday parties when a few of the children were playing with an ant’s nest thing and trying to find some to put into the container. They got upset over been bitten and to be honest I had no idea ants over here could and did bite.
That is until they bit me! the bite is extremely a bit sore and can cause a reaction and as such it doesn’t make me want to spend time out in the grass. I am forever telling my two to get off the grass and it’s not that they will wreck it (it is a mess) but more that I frightened they will get bitten and take an allergic reaction.
I have googled and found people saying find the nest and pour boiling water in but when the garden is riddled including tarmac areas I am lost about where to start and don’t think my kettle would cope being boiled hundreds of times.
I would love to be able to get the garden sorted this year and let my two play football and put tents up etc so any advice would be more than welcomed.
Please let someone know how to rid the garden of these horrible red ants.
