I am going to have an attempt at explaining the settings on the dial on a camera- as before I can only use my own Canon 400D as the basis for my explanation but am sure it can be related to other cameras too.

A – this setting is still in automatic but I have included it as not many seem to know that it means automatic but with no flash.

B –  P – Program. The camera sets aperture and shutter speed. You have control over the ISO white balance and flash.  It works similar to the automatic green box setting but gives you a little but of control over the picture

C- TV – Shutter Priority. You set the shutter speed and the camera sets the aperture. This means you only have to try and get one part right as the camera will always set the reciprocal part according to your calculations.

D- AV- Aperture Priority this works in the opposite way to TV and sets the aperture and the camera uses the appropriate shutter speed.

E- M – Manual Mode. You set shutter speed and aperture.  You have full control over all parts of the exposure, shutter speed, aperture and ISO.  The camera will not choose any settings

To date I mainly use TV and AV rather than fully on manual as I often don’t have the time to set up the shot.  If I am taking pictures of the children at play I often use auto to make sure I can capture the moment as they don’t wait to be posed!

A quick guide I follow is:

  • If the subject is moving use TV
  • If the subject is static use AV
  • If you need to get the photo use auto
I am going to set a task next and it will be photographs taken using automatic and preferably a couple with the flash enabled.  Join up with me on Monday and show me the photos you have taken and what you think- I will also show you how to read the screen on the back showing you the details of the picture-this is useful as sometimes you can take a photo on auto and then using the exposure details that auto used try to replicate and improve on it on a manual setting.
Please let me know if you are interested in joining up and I will get a linky set up and a badge created. thanks

I use a Canon 400D so a pretty old basic entry level DSLR model but one that has served me well and needs to last another while yet before being upgraded.

Below are the buttons on the camera: (photo taken on my phone)

  • In the top left hand corner is the display photo details.  This is good to use as you will be able to see what settings have been used and how the photograph has been set up -we will cover this in a future post with examples
  • Menu options gives you options of setting red eye reduction, photo quality etc
  • the button to review photos lets you skip through all taken
  • trash can is as always to delete
  • AV Variable is to manually over or under expose a photograph- we will cover this later
  • Self timer gives you 10 seconds to get into place before the photograph is taken
  • ISO is explained here
  • White balance is coming up in a future post

Christmas Day this year we returned to having our dinner at home rather than visiting family.  The day started at 08:45 when MrR woke us all up to go and see if Santa had arrived.

I ran ahead to get the camera and on entering the sitting room, K’s face was so funny she was open mouthed!

Buster came in just behind K and went straight to the table to try and find out why the mince pies and milk had gone, daddy had to tell him to look behind as Santa had left presents!

Both loved their presents K had asked for a Flicker, Playdoh machine and a surprise.  Buster asked for a Flicker, football and teddy.  Both got what they asked for and a few extra bits.  Buster had no idea what a flicker even was until we showed him! Playdoh machines are still as rubbish as they had been in my day.

They are both enjoying going round and round the table on the flickers and even MrR and I have had a few goes!

Using their cameras, I wonder who they are taking after?

On their trunki toy boxes which they loved.  We bought some for their cousins too so hopefully they enjoy using them and tidying up their toys!

One of the big hits was a wooden castle that I got from a lady on my facebook, thanks Sharon it is being used lots.  They also had a few prizes that I had won, games from Orchard toys via The Boy and Me, a rucksack from Pink Lining via Mummy Daddy and Me Makes Three; amongst others.

Once presents etc were opened K went to Church with her Grandparents and straight after both K and Buster went to Mass.  They seldom go but love getting the chance at Christmas!

We then went visiting were they got lots more presents before coming home for dinner cooked by MrR.

Once our starter and main course were finished we went visiting again and got even more presents.  K and Buster played with their cousins and aunts and uncles before coming home to bed. Buster was doing everyones hair while K was trying out some makeup!

When K and Buster finally went to sleep, MrR and I watched the Inbetweener’s film- one that I could easily have missed!

We had a fantastic day and received lovely presents.  We had a very quick visit to R’s garden and left him a new teddy statue as his present.

Tomorrow we plan to have a quiet Boxing Day and let Buster and K play with their presents.
