How to make a Costume for Mr Tumble

I decided that after searching the Internet and coming up with very little costumes for Mr Tumble I decided to come up with my own version of the outfits.

I have a background in being able to sew but haven’t made anything for many years and as such was a bit lost as to where to start.  I looked at many pictures- not sure why I felt the need to do this as Mr Tumble is a very regular visitor to our house, and came up with an idea in my head of what I wanted.

After going to go the local craft school I managed to get the attention of one of the sales assistants and started working through my list!

For the two costumes i decided to go with yellow trousers with blue ribbon stripes, a yellow and blue waistcoat. red, green and yellow felt and a bow tie.

I bought too much of some material but my list is as below:

  • 3 metres yellow poly cotton
  • 3 metres blue poly cotton
  • 10 metres of thin blue ribbon – I could have done with approx 12 metres but made it work!
  • 1 metre orange felt
  • 1 metre yellow felt
  • 1 metre green felt
  • thin elastic 10 metres pack
  • 4 x large yellow buttons
  • 2 x snap fasteners
  • 1 x yellow spool of thread
  • 1 x blue spool of thread

It was a lot more than I had originally thought I would be ordering!

To decide on a pattern I choose pull on trousers from both my two and roughly drew round them adding in a seam allowance.  To make the waistcoat pattern I cut up a t-shirt and removed the sleeves and used this as the pattern- again adding in a seam allowance.

Before sewing up the trousers sew lengths of blue ribbon down the length of the trousers try 3 on the front and back each leg.  Sew up the trousers and add in elastic into the waist.
Once sewn up add on a couple of patches I used a zig-zag stitch to outline them.

Sew up the waistcoat, for Buster I used a yellow back and blue front but for K I made a mistake and did it the opposite way round. Then cut and add felt stars- I took the easy method and just sewed two diagonal lines of stitches across the stars to hold them on.  I then sewed on two of the buttons just for show and added a snap fastening underneath to hold the waistcoat closed.

Cut out a rectangle of orange felt and sew a smaller rectangle in the middle so that the bow tie is pulled into the middle.  Then add in felt shapes to the bow tie and add elastic so that the bow tie can be worn.

and voila two Mr Tumble outfits- photos aren’t great as they wouldn’t stay still!

I still need to add red noses with a bright lipstick!
